Joanne has been blessed to share yoga in many forms with practitioners in Arizona, California, Thailand, the UAE, Hawaii, India, and Dublin since 2007. Her honored teachers include Prahlad (Sivananda), Priscilla Potter, Lisa Schrempp, Shiva Rea, Dharma Mittra, Aadil Palkhivala, Richard Freeman, Pandit Raj Kumar Vajpayee Yogacharya and Surinder Singh.
In addition to regular yoga classes and occasional workshops on tour, Joanne recently received certification as a Yogacharya (master) at the 500-hr level and is currently enrolled in Georg Feuerstein’s comprehensive 800-hr Yoga Philosophy course. For her efforts in providing free yoga classes to under-served communities Joanne will be participating in the New York Yoga Journal Conference in April 2012.
Coming from a long line of healers and leaders in the world of esoterica, Joanne feels a deep responsibility as a yoga instructor. Her great grandfather was a Chinese medicine doctor in Fukushima, Japan before moving to Hawaii and her father, a therapist and musician, was President of the Theosophical Society in Dublin. Joanne draws from both svadhyaya (self-study) and the wisdom of her ancestors, alive and passed, to ensure her students experience more than a simple workout.
Joanne was first drawn to a consistent yoga practice when the parallels between studio practice and the art of living became unmistakably clear. Since then, she’s pursued studies in all manner of healing arts and sciences: the ‘mind-body’ connection, scientific research on physiological and psychological benefits of postures, breathing techniques, meditation, mantra, Sanskrit, nutrition, sequencing, the chakra system, Thai massage, and Reiki. Yoga Lovin’ and her personal blog, The Weekly Jo, contain many articles on these subjects.
Since her first taste of yoga in 2000, Joanne has experienced first-hand the healing and transformational benefits of yoga. It gives her great joy to share these techniques with anyone looking for a healthful and abundant life on their path of Realization. Yoga meets us where we are, and can benefit practitioners of any background or body type, physically, psychologically, and spiritually.
